The Archdiocese of New Orleans has announced its intention to close the parish of St. Augustine Catholic Church in New Orleans, effective March 15, 2006.
We have asked the Archdiocese to reconsider this decision because of St. Augustine's spiritual leadership and vitality; and its historic and cultural signficance both in New Orleans and to African-Americans throughout the world.
St. Augustine was founded in 1842 at the request of the free black citizens of New Orleans. From its founding, the parish was a diverse community encompassing not only blacks and whites but also slaves as well as free persons.
