  St. Augustine is one of New Orleans's true gems; historically, culturally, socially and spiritually. I wonder if Archbishop Hugh's limited time in New Orleans is to blame for his decision. Anyone who has been to Sunday Mass at St. Augustine would recognize that it is as priceless to the City as Jackson Square or St. Louis Cathedral.
  
  The facts are that St. Augustine Parish is currently financially self-sufficient and is ministering to those devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Michael Valentino, a businessman and hotelier, has pledged to line up $1 million for the parish in financial aid from local businesses who value St. Augustine as a neighborhood anchor. And St. Augustine's Pastoral Council is willing to have the archdiocese set a series of performance targets which parishioners would have to meet in 18 months.
  
  This irreplaceable faith community deserves the chance to prove itself - for its own sake and that of New Orleans.

As I said in April I would install a new benevolent corporation in Germany in order to collect external members for our fine church, collect money like I did before and give support the Armand Richardson's Arabi Wrecking Krewe. The name of the new corporation is "St. Augustine & AWK International - Benevolent Support System for New Orleans.   On May 27, 1939 I made by First Communion as a student in first grade at St. Matthais Church. But, my father and mother always attened 11:30 AM Sunday Mass at St.Augustine. It seems Father Chambon (sp?)who had married them in Donaldsonville in 1927 was stationed at St. Augustine and this was the drawing card. This weekly ritual continued until my 38 yr. old father joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and we moved to be with him in California until the war ended in 1945. I am not familiar with St. Augustine as a "colored" church and it certainly would have made no difference to my father had that beeb the case. We moved from Mater Deloroso Parish to Lakeview and St. Dominic Parish in 1948 which is the first time I recall my parents going to Mass at our Parish Church. I truly hope and pray that St. Augustine will survive as a vibrant part of New Orleans and its spiritual life. I have lived in Houston since 1954 and we sold the Lakeview house in 1966 when my mother, May Youngs, left her job as secretary to Archbishop Hannan and came to live with me and my five children. I am glad that she was no longer with us to experience just the knowledge of the Hurricane Katrina devastation. May God Bless and bring His Pease to all who support continued life for St. Augustine historic Church and its members.
